Introduction to Coaching
We acknowledge and appreciate that a myriad of coaching approaches exist. In response to the unique conditions of different school sites and classrooms, the ELMI coaching model is grounded in a constructivist approach, with the belief that people learn by doing and reflecting on their actions. ELMI coaching is marked by high frequency and low duration, meaning coach and teacher typically have several short touchpoints during a given coaching cycle. Another defining feature of the model is in-the-moment coaching, during which a coach and teacher discuss or implement intentional teaching moves as instruction unfolds with students. In a Gardner Center report by Borsato, Sipes, and Sanchez (2014), 96% of teachers reported that ELMI’s in-classroom coaching contributed to improved math instruction “to some extent” or “to a great extent.” Borsata, Graciela, et al. Implementation Study of the Early Learning Math Initiative. Gardner Center, 2014.
Video: In-the-moment Coaching
The following video highlights ELMI’s in-the-moment coaching practice. The coaching allows teachers and coaches to problem solve during a challenging moment in a lesson. Engaging in the moment creates meaningful opportunities for exploring student thinking while collaborating alongside a thinking partner.

ELMI Coaching Model
The ELMI coaching model adapts to participants’ feedback and needs across multiple iterations. ELMI coaching typically follows the model seen below. This coaching cycle occurs within a work week but need not be completed in consecutive days.
Year 1 Teachers
Day 1 | 15 minute classroom session | Day 1 or 2 15 minute grade-level debrief |
Day 2 | 15 minute classroom session |
Day 3 | 15 minute classroom session |
Year 2 Teachers
Day 1 | 15 minute classroom session | Day 1 or 2 15 minute grade-level debrief |
Day 2 | 15 minute classroom session |
Day 3 | 15 minute classroom session |
Year 3 Teachers
Day 1 | 15 minute classroom session | 15 minute grade-level debrief |
Coaching Schedule
We encourage coaches and teachers to develop a scheduling system that works for their school site. To schedule coaching sessions, ELMI coaches and teachers typically use google sheets, as seen in the sample below, so that participants can access the schedule, as needed.
Coaching Log
ELMI coaches often use digital logs to keep track of pertinent information from coaching sessions, in the service of building upon prior conversations and learning.
